Xboundary - A Short Film

on Thursday, 14 May 2015. Posted in Alaska Fly Fishing & Adventure Films, Video, Conservation

Film by Ryan Peterson

Ryan Peterson and Salmon Beyond Borders have cooperated in producing a new short film showcasing the downstream Alaska problems associated with new mines being approved and developed across the border in British Columbia. It's a similar story - big money, big industry, and the relentless quest of man to exploit our natural environment for short-term gains.

From the filmmaker:

An open-pit mining boom is underway in northern British Columbia, Canada. The massive size and location of the mines--at the headwaters of major salmon rivers that flow across the border into Alaska--has Alaskans concerned over pollution risks posed to their multi-billion dollar fishing and tourism industries. These concerns were heightened with the Aug 4, 2014 catastrophic tailings dam failure at nearby Mt. Polley Mine in B.C.'s Fraser River watershed.

The Lost Boys of Yantarni - Full Film

on Thursday, 14 May 2015. Posted in Alaska Fly Fishing & Adventure Films, Video

Sponsored by Crystal Creek Lodge

The Lost Boys of Yantarni is the story of the quirky few, stubborn enough to live and work on one of the most rugged and formidable outreaches of the Alaska Peninsula - a Neverland practically unknown to the angling world. The allure? – giant, dime bright, Coho Salmon that charge into these mile-long rivers with a seek-and-destroy mentality.

Mother Nature still keeps secrets here, never really showing her hand. For the guys running the place, outwitting her is a daily battle. Severe weather, four-legged locals, and never-ending chores stack the odds against them.

“Oh, the glory of being a guide in Alaska . . .”

Mousing Alaska - Video

Mighty Mouse - Aniak River Lodge

KATIEMOUSE

The Fly Out team made a visit this past July to Aniak River Lodge in Western Alaska. If you've already watched the video above, then you'll understand why we are going back. The mousing on the Aniak is unlike anything we've ever experienced in Alaska - anywhere. Despite plenty of salmon eggs and flesh underwater, these rainbows are consistently looking up! Katie and I spent 90% of the time throwing a mouse pattern, but you could certainly wear yourself out "catching" with leeches, flesh patterns, beads, etc. The guides were great, the accommodations are clean and comfortable, and the fishing was off the charts. I won't mention numbers to avoid the onslaught of doubters and naysayers, but let's just say, the trout population is impressive. Serious anglers that would like to experience top water action with quality Alaska rainbows, look no further.

For 2015, we made early reservations for the prime mousing weeks at Aniak River Lodge. We'd like you to join us. Limited spots available. Call 406.781.7184 or Email for booking inquiries.

Salmon Connection (in Alaska)

on Tuesday, 03 June 2014. Posted in Alaska Fly Fishing & Adventure Films, Video

A Film by Ben Hamilton

From the Filmmaker:

The Salmon Connection video is part of a National Science Foundation exhibit to show the connection of salmon to the world around us. Artist Ray Troll and aquarium designers from Tenji Inc. have worked with our Science Center staff to make an exhibit that highlights the work of University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences, salmon researcher Dr. Daniel Schindler. The exhibit shows the connection between diverse salmon habitat, healthy oceans and healthy communities.

This video is meant to demonstrate the connection salmon have to our communities here in Alaska.
